Isla de Chizumulu (versión española)

Nuestra primera intención era pasar unos días en Likoma. Una pequeña isla en el lago más cercana a la frontera de Mozambique que a la de Malawi aunque pertenece a este último.sin embargo, en nuestro regreso de Zambia pasamos una noche en Mzuzu y conocimos a otros viajeros con la misma idea y al dueño (Nick) del único hotel en la isla vecina.

Dos días más tarde montabamos en uno de los ferris (Chambo) que va hasta Chizumulu y Likoma. Si Likoma es pequeña (8km de largo por 3 de ancho), Chizumulu es aún más pequeña. Y sólo hay un lugar donde quedarse: Wakwenda Retreat.

Hay pocas cosas que hacer en la isla: pasear, tomar el sol, ver atardeceres, hacer snorkeling y relajarse (hace unos años podías bucear, pero ahora tienes que ir a Likoma); y eso es lo que hicimos junto con los otros viajeros que se unieron (o a los que nos unimos), pese a que si decides ir a Chizumulu es probable que estés sólo. No te preocupes, Nick siempre puede contarte historias.

El camino de vuelta a Nkhata Bay fue desastrozo otra vez, pero esta vez en el Ilala. Los horarios no son exactos porque depende de la cantidad de mercancía que carguen y descarguen y la cantidad de gente que suban y bajen. El Ilala va desde la zona más al sur del lago hasta la zona norte y tiene varias paradas, por eso es tan difícil predecir los horarios. En nuestro caso llegamos con 9h de retraso a Nkhata Bay. Mi consejo: paciencia, las islas valen la pena.

Chizumulu island (english version)

Our first intention was to spend a couple of days at Likoma. It's a small island in the lake closer to Mozambique's boarder than to Malawi's, though it belongs to this one. However in our return from Zambia we spent one night at Mzuzu where we met some travellers withthe same idea and the owner (Nick) of Likoma's neighbour island's only hotel.

Two days later we step into one of the ferrys (Chambo) that goes to Chizumulu and Likoma. If Likoma is small (8km long and 3km wide), Chizumulu is even smaller. And there is only one place to stay: Wakwenda Retreat.

There are few things to do in the island: take a walk, lay in the sun, watch sunsets, snorkeling and relax  (sometime ago you could dive, now you have to go to Likoma for that); and that is what we did with the people that joined us (or that we joined), although if you xhoose to go to Chizumulu you might be alone. Don't worry, Nick can always tell you stories.

The way back to Nkhata Bay was caos again, but this time on the Ilala. Schedules are not exact because it depends on how much do they have to load an unload, how many people get on and off. Ilala goes from the southest part of the lake to the northest, and it has several stops, therefore it's difficult to pteredict timetables. In pur case we were 9h late on arrival to Nkahata Bay.

My suggestion: patience, the islands are worth it,
